What are some top African American ski resorts?

Shawn asked:

Some friends and I are organizing a ski trip for December 2010. We are all African American, and we want to find a ski resort with other blacks involved. Could you please help us out?

I have never heard of an “African American ski resort,” so I don’t know what exactly you mean by that term. If you’re trying to find a place in the US that will have a good mix of people of different races, then pretty much any of the “big” resorts will do: Squaw Valley, Heavenly, Steamboat, Breckenridge, Vail, etc., etc., etc. They all host people from all over the country and the world.

But if you’re looking to find a resort that solely caters to the African American crowd, I’ve never seen it.

Edit: and to build on what Willie said, I can vouch for the fact that the major West Coast resorts; Squaw, Heavenly, Alpine Meadows, Steamboat, etc., have a very diverse group of people on the slopes. In my experience, Heavenly and Squaw especially are host to a number of Europeans and Japanese, as well as black people from the Bay Area and Los Angeles. You might also want to consider a trip to Mammoth Lakes – they get a lot of the L.A. crowd.

Hunter Mountain, NY and Mountain Creek, NJ tend to draw more Blacks and Latinos due to their proximity to NYC. It has been my observation that by and large the further you go from NYC the less blacks you find at Eastern resorts. I’ve also found that the resorts closest to the city tend to draw more novice skiers/riders regardless of color. I do note that Blacks and Latinos I see at bigger resorts, further from the centers of population do tend to be more advanced skiers, but the number of such skiers/riders is really disproportional.

I can’t speak for Western resorts since I’m rarely at them anytime before mid-March. Sorry.

I’m not really sure how a ski resort would cater specifically to the needs of Blacks, or any other race, for that matter. The only color that really matters is Green!

It doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like, if you are being too rowdy or break the rules on the slopes and you’ll get the same treatment from the resort staff.

You’re going to have bad luck on this, as black people aren’t allowed to ski at major resorts. You might be able to slip under the radar if it was just you and a white friend, but a whole group of you gang banging nut jobs? Don’t even bother, just go play basketball or something.

well that’s pretty ******. How would you feel if I wanted a ski area that didn’t have very many blacks? Why do you care what color other skiers’ skin is?
