Every mountain has areas set aside for beginners. In general, the further south an area is, the more carefully they cater to a beginner skier, since more experienced skiers will likely head further north (or west) from DC.
Try Whitetail – it is only a couple of hours drive, has a decent vertical, and a reputation for doing a good job of grooming.
