Best ski vacation for beginners & kids?

J asked:

We live in St. Louis, MO and are trying to plan a ski trip. I’d like a low elevation spot due my wife’s high-altitude problems. Steamboat came to mind, but its $4000+ for the trip. We’ve also got two small kids. Thoughts on a good place to go that won’t break the bank and is good for beginners? Also perhaps closer to Missouri?

I think Snowshoe Mountain, West Virginia would be the best. I would go there with my youth group every February.

Try Heavenly at Lake Tahoe (it spans both the Nevada and California sides). They usually have some pretty good deals on round trip airfare and lodging. Heavenly has, IMO, one of the best ski schools in the country. Plus, you have a ton of activities for both you, your wife AND the kids, off the slopes. Granted, its not closer to Missouri than Steamboat, but it’s a terrific place to visit.
