Im a beginner snowboarder?

nickdirtbiker55 asked:

iv been skiing for like 8 or 9 years now but all of my friends are into snowboarding. Im going to my local mountain this weekend with all my friends. i was wondering if i should try snowboarding with them, they all say that its not too hard and plus i have been skateboarding for a few years now too. will i be able to hit jumps or grind rails on my first or second day? will i be able to pick it up fast?

It really depends on the person. I had been skiing for about 15 years when I first tried snowboarding and I broke my wrist on the first day on a bunny slope. However, I had never skateboarded, so you will have an advantage there. It is VERY different from skiing. If you’re pretty athletic and stick with it you will pick it up, but do NOT expect to be hitting the half pipe or rail yards on your first, second, third or even fourth day.

No. Unless you’re some snowboarding prodigy, you will not be hitting rails and jumps on your 2nd day. But since you have a skateboarding background, chances are you’ll pick up snowboarding pretty quickly and if you’ve got the aptitude, maybe you’ll be turning (heel and toe) by the end of day 1 or day 2. Save the jumps for day 3.

If you skate some it will help, but boarding is it’s own sport. It’s like comparing skating to surfing, etc. You should try it if you never have. It will take some getting used to, but you may find it a lot more fun than skiing. Maybe jumps on the 2nd day, depends on your curve. Have fun!

I have been snowboarding for four years and skateboarding for 6, and before that I skied. I learned the basics pretty fast, it REALLY helps to take a lesson or two. It took me a year to even think about getting into the park, and I go almost every weekend.

first, concept behind snowboarding is a little different than skate boarding…if you mess up on a skateboard you can bail out, you can’t bail out of a snowboard. I encourage you to snowboard however because the basics are similar but as far as your desire to hit jumps and grinds…you’d have to crawl before you can walk. It takes most boarders years to learn how to carve because it is an advanced technique (and when I say carve, i don’t mean alpining it down the mountain like most amateur boarders do and call it carving…carving doesn’t slow you down when you board), and the no skateboarder i know carves on a regular basis but since you have skiied for awhile, you do have the basic fundamentals down.

If you can heel side and toe side turn on command and on a dime, you know how to instinctively shift your weight from front to back when necessary, and you got a brass pair of balls on you, then go for it on your second day. if you can’t do any of the aforementioned things, and you insist on keeping up with your buddies then I hope your health insurance is paid off.
