ummm yea ur mom was incorrect. u very smart to wear one! many huge head injuries occur while skiing because of not wearing a helmet!!

Your mom won’t be laughing if you get hurt!

But seriously, I have been skiing for over 10 years and didn’t use a helmet. Last year, I decided to get one and do not regret it at all. Plus, it really keeps your head warm when it’s cold & windy!

I have a Giro helmet. I told some friends that I broke down and bought a helmet and they thought I was crazy… but then again, they don’t ski.

I think in this case, it’s good to listen to your friends and not to your mom.

Haha a helmet isn’t a bad idea, but not necessary. You’re just starting out so you should probably pick one up. More importantly you should have a good instructor that will emphasize the skier’s code. Always be alert while skiing and notice your surroundings. I’ve seen more incidents because people simply weren’t paying attention and wiped out or hit someone else.

There are really only a few times when you need a helmet skiing,
    1. When you are skiing or someone is skiing or snowboarding near you.
    2. When you are riding the lift or getting on or off the lift.
3 When you want your head protected from the weather or things around you.
Other than that a helmet is not vital just nice to have so you can put stickers on it.

You are very smart in getting a helmet. I have a doctor, who has put me back together a few times, tell me that the only thing he can’t put back together is my brain. I was too cool to wear a helmet and then I caught an edge and gave myself an concussion. I have never stepped foot on the snow without a helmet on since and it has prevented me from getting many more concussions as well as probable more serious brain injuries. Spend the hundred dollars or less and get a sick helmet.

i usually dont wear one snowboarding but i think i’m getting one this year–i’ve ahd too many close calls…why was your mom laughing at using a helmet??? hell, helmets are even considered cool nowadays

  8. Riley Says:

Having a helmet is a great idea.

As a beginner, it will protect you against others and against yourself. Sometimes, nothing can be more dangerous than an out of control skier on a beginner slope at a ski area. Also, snow isn’t always soft, especially on the hard packed beginner slopes!

As you advance, you might start skiing in the terrain park, or perhaps in the back country. There a helmet can be a life saver, literally.

Make sure to visit your local ski shop and try on several brands, they all fit a little different so it is important to find one that is comfortable.

    Good Luck!

I used to work at a ski resort, and the one time I had a kid that wanted to wear a helmet, but the parents talked him out of it, the kid hit a tree and died. Probably would have lived if he would have been wearing helmet. Ask your mom if she wants to live with that for the rest of her life. Why a parent would try to talk their kid out of doing something that could potentially save their life is beyond me.

I have two helmets, a Giro and a Ovo. I started wearing one in 1998 after a close call with a boulder and a tree stump. I was the first of my friends (all about age 22-23 then) to wear one. Now, in our 30s, all of us wear one usually all the time.

I have been spared two concussions and at least one potentially bad laceration thanks to my helmets. One concussion and the laceration would have been my own fault, but on the other occasion I was completely blindsided by a snowboarder and knocked to the ground where I hit my head pretty hard. The helmet made a difference.

We see several patients a year in the ski patrol shack who could have avoided a head injury, especially minor ones, if they had been wearing a helmet. We also see 2-3 a year where the patient was wearing a helmet and the injury was severely lessened by the helmet.

Get fitted for a helmet and wear one.

Helmets are for women and children. Real Men don’t need helmets on the snow.
