How to start trick skiing?

Jeff Q asked:

I have been skiing for awhile and would like to start doing some tricks while skiing, as I am getting my first pair of twin tips soon. My friend usually makes a jump down at his house, but i am not planning on using my new skis. Are there any good tricks to start doing to get my confidence up and start getting into trick skiing. I can ski backwards ok but I could get better.

Start with straight airs until you’re comfortable with jumping. Then add some grabs and move on to rotations. 180s are easy switch 180s too. If you have access to a box, hit that before you try rails until you get the hang of sliding sideways.

I would just start on little jumps and work your way up to medium ones: maybe ones that put you 4-6 ft off of the ground. then try a 180 spin by pirouetting your body and twisting to backwards, and land on a downhill patch of snow. its fine to crash a couple times trying this. then move into 360s. if you can do those then your basic non-spin trick would be a grab. reach down and grab your ski by your boot(its a good idea if you have poles to have the pole strap on). you can loop these into spins and then you will know some basic tricks. most importantly don’t feel intimidated by anyone watching you. im 11 and i was pretty nervous but when you land one the critics will be very impressed and you wont be nervous anymore also try fun-boxes which are long bowes that you jump on and slide sideways down. try these before rails.

first of all its freeskiing bud and if your friend is making a jump use twin tips! if you go off it with race or normal ski your gonna get messed up
but to get your confidence up do 180s a bunch the try some 3s that will get it up.
Once you’ve got that which wont take a while throw in some grabs or rails.

get some twins and go to the park or build a little kicker yourself. start small with some 180s and stuff and just keep trying new stuff. you gotta be confident and once you get the hang of it on small kickers and rails go for the bigger ones

theres really no secret to start freestyling, just always commit to your trick (dont flake out once you start, ends up being more painful that way anyways) and dont be scared to fall and take a hit, it happens, it sucks, youll get over it pretty quick
