None really. Very different use of muscles, and muscle groups. Different equipment, different technique. In climbing you’re going up, in skiing you’re going down. Different use of Gravity.

At this point you can see why I feel like this question was a joke. But just in case you’re for real. Perhaps you’d consider changing your assignment to the similarities between mountaineering and skiing, if you can. Because they cross over in such fundamental ways that there’s a new sport starting to develoup called ski mountaineering. Interesting to look into. Especially for hard core skiiers or mountaineers.

I do both, and the only real similarity that I can think of is the use of muscles to balance your weight. Both require you to use your core muscles to balance your weight over a very particular part of your foot at any particular time – and the ability to shift your weight from foot to foot in time with the motion of the rest of your body.

    Good Luck

They are ot really that similar. You could say that they both use a the coordination of both your arms and legs. But they really are two very different things.

I do both as well. I can’t say that there’s a lot of similarities between the two sports.

I do ski tour (climbing with skis) but even that is more akin to hiking than it is to technical rock climbing. I’ve had to climb to the peak with crampons and an axe in order to ski down, but I considered it “climbing” at that point, and “skiing” on the way down.

The physical skills are totally different. Different muscles are used in different ways. However, there are a lot of outdoor skills applicable to both sports. I use the following skills in both sports:

Knowledge of weather exposure and hazards.
Altitude Sickness precautions and first aid.
    Map reading/ Route planning.
Use of ropes and rappelling equipment (for ski patrol).
Knowledge of gear and clothing. (A lot of my same gear and clothes goes on both climbing trips and ski trips.)
