How long did it take before you felt completely comfortable snowboarding?
Kristen asked:
I just started snowboarding last winter, and up until the end of the season I still wasn’t 100% comfortable on a snowboard (after going 10-15 times). I got much better so that I wasn’t falling often if at all, but I was still nervous about falling when going fast. Also, how long before you started hanging out in the park (if you do)?

Probably one full season. Just like everything, it takes practice. Keep at it.

i can’t exactly say cuz as long as i can remember i’ve been riding…but it’s gonna be different for everyone, you say you feel pretty comfortable just riding after about 10 times so i think that’s pretty good…give the park a try, dont’ be one of those terrain park groupies that sit at the top and leave a small path to get through, they do more sitting than riding, but just give it a try, but nothing big….just keep riding and you’ll notice a progression.

It really took me about 4 seasons to feel comfortable. But then I started at an older age than most do (38) and I didn’t do any previous sports that required balance and coordination. The first couple of years I only went 3-5 times though so I’d say it will take 2 good seasons. My nieces picked it up rather quickly. One good season and they are carving nicely and we’re looking forward to the upcoming season. I’m sure they are going to pass me up this year. It seems the younger you are when you start the faster you pick it up.

Its ok to be nervous about falling when going fast, ive been riding 11 years now and i still get nervous. Not as much as i used to but i dont push myself to learn new stuff as much now as i used to. Snowboarding is all about progression to progress you need to push yourself, when you push yourself its natural to be nervous it just shows your very alert to what could happen and is a good thing. Falling isent a bad thing either its all part of the learning process. If you watch the pros they fall all the time but its because they are constantly pushing themselves to get better and progress. If you never fall you probably arnt riding to your full potential. Good luck with the riding.

About 10 times and after my first big mountain trip. I’m on the east coast, so we have little hills. It wasn’t until my first trip to Europe (Bormio, Livigno, St. Moritz) that I felt 100% comfortable on my snowboard.
I don’t hang out in the park, but I do prefer finding fresh powder.

I took some lessons to learn how to carve, then I just got more comfortable by practicing and going faster, but I’m still nervous when I’m going really really fast, everyone is. I started hangin out in the park alot in my 3rd season.
